Hayden was recruited by the OSS and eventually ended up in
Italy where he ran arms and equipment to the Yugoslavian partisans. He led over four hundred guerrillas and was in charge of over twenty
boats. He was discharged as a Captain. After the war, he became a member of the Communist party but later renounced his membership
before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Because of his association with the Communist Tito, he was branded a communist by
Senator McCarthy in his infamous "witch hunt." Ed. note: In 1944, he was secretly parachuted into Yugoslavia to replace Eau Claire's Bob "Hooker" Kolstad as chief liaison officer between Tito and the Allies. Kolstad was flown out of Yugoslavia by the Russians. He stayed in the AAF after the war and retired as a "bird colonel." |
