Sea Gull Monument, Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1848 and 1849, crickets threatened to destroy crops and starve Mormon pioneers. Sea gulls preyed on the crickets and saved the early settlers.

Salt Beds, Great Salt Lake, Utah. This level, smooth expanse of hard crystallized salt has been the site of many speed and endurance records for automobiles. 

Hospital Wards, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Established in 1826, it became an Air Corps Replacement Training Center during World War II.

Unit No. 2, Army Air Forces Technical School, Chicago. In 1942, a Chicago landmark, the Congress Hotel, became a Army training center for radio operators and mechanics.

New Municipal Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri, Headquarters for the USO.


Yale Athletic Field, Haines City, Florida. Soldiers/Players from MacDill Field, like me, played baseball here in 1942.
