Speaking of, and with, the British

Written by Harold (Diz) Kronenberg

It took awhile to get used to the British language, but I cannot say enough about how much I admired the British people. I found out that you should never underestimate them. The Germans found that out, too. Their golf courses and open parks were littered with wrecked automobiles and debris for, in earlier times, they expected the Germans to invade. They cluttered golf courses, and such, to prevent the enemy from landing gliders there.

It was interesting to hear and learn the British language. Gasoline was petrol, movies were called cinemas, and the ever present bicycles were called wheels. We often would have to ask an Englishman for directions. He would give us the directions in his quaint British language; then, invariably, end with "I say there, Yank, you can't miss it". Of course, we often did.
