40 Youths Pass Pre-Radar Tests at Senior High
Refresher Course to Be Given
During the past week, more than 50 youths from Senior High and St. Patrick's High, have been interviewed by Chief Petty Officer Fred Boughton, Milwaukee, Navy Radar Recruiting Officer, to determine their eligibility to be considered as applicants for radar training in the Navy. More than 40 qualified by passing a preliminary test, which was also calculated to point out to the youths the review, or improvement, in their studies, before taking the final and qualifying Eddy test.

The radar procurement program is sponsored, in Eau Claire, by the War Activities Committee, of which Clarence Gilbertson is chairman, with the co-operation of the high schools. The test given this week does not qualify, nor obligate, the boys to appointment in radar. In order to prepare the boys for taking the qualifying Eddy test, early in April, a 10-week refresher course has been organized and will be sponsored by the vocational school, as a civic service, according to W. L. Enge, Director.

The course will include a refresher review of mathematics, physics, radio, and shop practice and will meet Tuesday and  Thursday evenings at 7 o'clock, beginning January 30.

Instructors, announced today, are W. P. Clark, physics; Dr. R. C. Judd, radio and electricity; Miss Elli Otteson, mathematics; and C. E. Milward, shop practice.

The first meeting of the group which will take the course will be held Monday evening, January 29 at 6:30 in the form of a civic dinner at the Elks Club. The boys will be entertained by the Elks, and the heads of civic organizations will be invited to be present.

Three Navy men are also expected to be present at the dinner; they are Chief R. W. Shuey, recruiter in charge of the Chippewa Falls area; Edward Beauchine, Special Travelling Recruiter; and Chief Boughton, who will speak on radar and its application in the post-war world.

Interested boys from nearby communities have also been invited to take the refresher course through their local principals. It is also open to men of draft age who have already passed their pre-induction physical.

Upon completion of the refresher course, the boys will take the Eddy test and, upon passing, are offered appointments in the Navy as Seamen First Class at $66 a month. After 10 weeks of boot training, they are transferred to technical radio school for an additional 10 months training.

Graduating from these schools, the boys become petty officers in radar, in charge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of radar and electronic devices aboard ships and aircraft.

Consent of the parents is required before any boy may be enlisted.
