| The nation's movement from sports teams to Army and Navy
training camps was emphasized, when Private Robert Jauron (center) of the
Sioux Falls Army Technical School worked out with the Eau Claire Bears
of the Northern League here Thursday night.
Jauron, from Nashua, NH played halfback and fullback in Coach Frank Leahy's 1940 Boston College Eleven that climaxed an unbeaten season with a victory over Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans. Deferred in the draft, until he graduated last spring, he was first sent to Miami, FL, where he played on the Army Baseball Team that included Hank Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers and Hugh Mulcahy of Philadelphia. He is a member of the physical training group of the Army camp here. Wilfred "Rosy" Ryan (left), manager of Eau Claire's league leaders, is said to be applying for an appointment to the Navy's physical training setup. Bob Hoff (right), the son of Mrs. J. J. Brittnacher of this city and doubleheader specialist against the Canaries, has passed his examinations for entrance into the Navy Pre-flight School at Iowa City. Young Hoff pitched two wins in one night against Sioux Falls last week and narrowly missed repeating Wednesday, when he lost the second on his mates' errors 3-2, after a 6-to-0 shutout. Eau Claire has already had four of its leading players drafted, with three others on the anxious seat. |
